The sleep fish origin story.
My name’s Chloe, and I’m a mechanical and aspiring ocean engineering undergraduate. I love sleeping, I love all things about the ocean, and one night my friend jokingly called me the sleep fish and thus the name stuck with me for this site.
I started this blog to share marine science tidbits for people without an extensive scientific background; after all, poking around the internet was how I discovered I was passionate about our oceans. If, by compiling my findings from scouring the internet for years, I can help you answer just one question, then my blog has served its purpose! 🙂
The site domain is “sleepingfishy” cuz “sleepfish” was $2000, but coincidentally it’s a bit of a pun on “sleeping beauty,” my favorite princess as a tiny kid. I guess it was fate. My parents dug this out of our garage in 2021: my 3-year old self’s masterpiece called “Princess Ocean,” because it’s an ocean matching the color of Aurora’s pink dress.

FAQ
How did you actually get into marine science?
- The Internet! As a native Chicagoan, marine science wasn’t huge in the Midwest. I discovered ocean engineering while applying to college and picked up R.H. Stewart’s Introduction to Physical Oceanography from this MIT OpenCourseWare page.
- I didn’t know about a lot of relevant industries until I got to college and did more self-studying, and learning from a professor who was an oceanographer. I currently intern with a lab that works with water power and I’m curious about marine power and biomimetics.
What do you do outside of sleepfish?
- Music, embroidery, archery, racecar building (Formula SAE), drawing… there’s too many things I like!! I will say additionally that I’m a huge huge fan of Tolkien’s legendarium and Jujutsu Kaisen (please talk to me about the Silmarillion or the latest JJK chapter)!
Can you answer my [insert random topic] question?
- Probably! I’m happy to talk about most things. Feel free to send me an inquiry (be it marine, terrestrial, extraterrestrial, or other) in the “idea box” page or email me at sleepfish.blog@gmail.com!
