What is sleep fish (and how do I use it)?

Sleep fish is a blog about anything ocean related! My name’s Chloe (aka the sleep fish), an undergraduate mechanical engineering student. I’ve loved sea creatures and the ocean since childhood, so I figured I’d share some resources and answers to interesting marine questions I’ve collected over time. It’s for anyone beginning their journey into the marine science world, or anyone who’s just curious. If you’re new here, welcome! 🙂

  • How do I navigate sleep fish?
    • Use the side bar links and home button (the sleep fish text and fish icon on the left)!

I got this title from a friend who originally suggested it as a joke, since I was telling them about this oceanic blog idea super late at night, but as time went on it grew on me. In the spirit of this website, I’ll answer the commonly asked question “do fish sleep” to the best of my ability as well, although this is also an area of current scientific research.

The short answer: yes and no, because they rest but stay somewhat alert to their surroundings. So the title of this blog is actually a little bit of a misnomer, but I couldn’t let go of the cute fish logo ! If you’ve ever owned a pet fish, you’ve probably seen it floating at the bottom of its tank or inside a fake log at night, and perhaps sometimes during the day as well. Your goldfish would probably still be a little startled if someone rapped on the glass with their knuckles, though, unlike your friend who sleeps through fire alarms. Most fish also don’t have eyelids, so you won’t see most of them closing their eyes the same way you and I do when we’re asleep.

If you’re really curious, I skimmed an interesting research paper about how fish exhibit a circadian rhythm during their rest cycles, but remain alert to danger.
